A privately owned island, 12km off the coast, Motiti is a mix of Maori land, avocado orchards and cattle farming, so access to some parts is restricted. Fishing, swimming, snorkelling and diving are favourite pastimes in the island waters - with the wreck of a former tug, Taioma, one of the attractions.
