Work is the curse of the drinking classes, as Oscar Wilde put it. But times are a little tougher in the Western Bay, and it is part of the thinking behind our launch of a new page on Employment. It’s a useful addition to our pages on life style, education and real estate. The Port of Tauranga remains the engine room of the Western Bay’s economy – providing 20,000 - plus jobs. But even a quick Net surf turns up lots of other jobs in a variety of industries. Skilled workers are needed in IT, construction and engineering, health care, town planning, food technology...and more. At a rough count, there are more than a dozen employment agencies that cover different sectors. Tradestaff for example, specialises in construction, engineering and manufacturing. HRG covers accounting, the legal profession, office administration, etc. We point job seekers to some useful sites on this page.
Tauranga Man’s Bid to be World’s Fastest Amputee
Motivational speaker and adventurer Tony Christiansen, has set himself another challenge – to become the world’s fastest amputee on the famed salt flats at Bonneville, in Utah. Tony was inspired by watching the movie, The World’s Fastest Indian. ‘Jeez, I could do this,’ he thought, and the plan was hatched. Tony Christiansen says there are wheelchair bound competitors at Bonneville, but he’ll be the first amputee. The sign writer turned inspirational speaker, with a background of speedway and drag racing, has adapted his drag racer for the speed run- aiming for a top speed of 200 mph. Tony already does a 9 second quarter mile hitting 150 mph, so it’s not an impossible dream. It’ll be Bonneville’s 60th anniversary, and 10 Kiwis will be racing, seven in cars and three on motorbikes. We’ll be bringing you updates on Tony’s bid, plus pictures.
Naturist Park’s Top Award
Katikati Naturist Park has scooped up the country’s top award for holiday parks. The park has won the holiday park category of the New Zealand 2008 Tourism Industry Awards. The owners Joan and Kevin Sampson say it’s a reward for hard work over 14 years, transforming their Park from an untidy empty block of land, into a thriving tourist business with a full range of accommodation and recreation facilities. Kevin says naturist resorts and holiday parks are now a significant and recognised part of the tourism industries in Europe, Florida, parts of the Caribbean, and elsewhere. ‘The award brings that recognition to New Zealand.’ The Sampsons say it is very rewarding to see how new guests find mental liberation in being ‘freed of modern society’s pressures about their bodies.’

Aqua Vida Spa in Welcome Bay has launched its ‘Float Ins’ where guests can bring a DVD to watch while soaking in the spa. Groups are encouraged to bring togs and a towel and make a night of it, with drinks and nibbles. The cost is $25 per person, and groups are welcome any time from 6.30pm. Homeshow – Plus Knowhow
The Homeshow is on from the 22nd to the 24th of this month, with a whopping 170 exhibitors – that’s a huge array of specialty products and services. But the Show has a strong educational element as well. The Property Know-How seminars will offer visitors free, impartial advice - with sessions throughout the day. First-time homebuyers and property investors can expect to take home tips - including pitfalls to avoid, and ideas to boost the value of your property. There are deals to be had, of course. Fowler Homes, winner of the Master Builders Supreme award in 2007 is offering a special discount for visitors, and Ultimate Homes NZ is offering a free 42inch plasma TV and home theatre system for orders arising from the show. A continuous Bay Hopper bus service will run to and from Tawa Street Reserve to the Mt Action Centre. Park your car conveniently at Blake Park and wait no more than five minutes to ride direct to the show - back again when you're ready.
