Learn to Sail, Windsurf, & More...

Learn to Sail, Windsurf, & More...

If learning a new water sport from sailing to kite surfing is high on your wish list for this summer – a waterside centre in Kulim Park is the perfect place to start. Elements Watersports, now in its fifth year, has a big variety of courses and packages - along all the right equipment and instructors to get you sailing, paddling, windsurfing... and more.

And Kulim Park offers a fantastic setting with shallow water for the complete beginner to begin to learn to sail or windsurf.

Elements Watersports owner-operator Peter Head says that with summer just around the corner (somewhere!) it's time to dig out your togs, and get out on the water. The company is holding an Open day on Sunday 3rd October at Kulim Park to give people a ‘taster’ of what they have to offer.

Peter Head says the company has gone from strength to strength over the past five years, and now offers even more tuition and rental options for young people and adults alike. The centre offers tuition on a one-to-one basis or for groups, Go Sailing days and week long camps for schools, and also caters for birthday parties and events.

“Elements has a lot to offer with everything from learn to sail and windsurf courses after school for our Active Youth club, to commercially-endorsed courses for crew on super yachts. “Our staff are all nationally and internationally-qualified to ensure you get the best professional tuition, and with a big choice of equipment chosen to make learning and improving even more fun - there really are no barriers to getting out on the water and enjoying our great backyard,” says Peter.

Elements has three full time staff over summer and a pool of six to 12 casual staff – mainly “young guns” who assist with after school sailing courses. The school courses are run in conjunction with the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy and Tauranga Powerboat Club. Youths learn how to sail single or double-handed in centreboard type boats like the Topaz sailing dinghies.

And if buying a boat is just not in the budget, then Elements will rent you a boat for the day to sail  away to Matakana.  “Our superb Omega dinghy will happily take a family of five for a great day on the inner harbour, but if you’re not quite ready to sail on your own, rent a dinghy with an instructor to take you on a destination sail.”

The centre also trains people in some of the speedier, more adrenaline-pumping water sports such as kite surfing and jet skiing.  If you’re a power boat owner already, but want more skills and knowledge, Elements offers popular Coastguard courses including the Day Skipper and Boatmaster, along with engine maintenance and VHF radio courses.

Elements even puts together Adventure Packages where you can choose from a range of water sports, combined with land activities such as blokarting, mountain biking and horse trekking.  Peter Head says that safety briefings are provided with all their courses and rental options,  wetsuits and buoyancy aids are supplied, and customers can be assured of great equipment that’s well-maintained, and of course - friendly staff.

“Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty - water sports wise - has proven not just its attractiveness, but ability to deliver the types of recreational boating that people want - whatever the craft - right through to providing an excellent training ground for all levels right up to world champions.” Elements is easy to find at its base on the inner harbour at Kulim Park in Matua. Look out for the white shed on the water’s edge and lots of water craft activity.
