Taste of Asia
One of the Mount’s worst kept secrets, this family-run Asian eatery was well known to locals, even in its tiny former premises down the road. The driving force behind the cuisine, says owner Mark Caldwell, is wife Lee – a mix of Thai and Laotian. The menu has more than 20 main rice dishes, priced from around $18 to $22, another five noodle dishes, and four fish dishes. It is mainly Thai food with some Malaysian and Vietnamese influences. Asian food fans will find old faves like nasi goreng, laksa, and Thai green curry, but there are also dishes like Vietnamese soup, and quirkily – Mongolian Garlic Lamb. Indoor/outdoor dining, and a big takeaway menu. The restaurant is pleasant and unpretentious, with softly-lit walls of a restful red, and al fresco dining well suited to a warm Mount evening. Fully licensed and well stocked with Thai and other Asian beers. Open 5 pm til late, tel 575 4555. 94 Maunganui Road, downtown Mount, tel 575 4555
