Homes of Hope Art Exhibition
An array of artwork will be on display tomorrow, to spotlight child abuse in the community. Homes of Hope is a therapeutic foster care facility for children that differs from Child Youth and Family as whole groups of siblings can be taken in, together. Many of the children have been abused and abandoned, arriving on the doorsteps of social workers with just the clothes on their backs. Spokeswoman Dorothy Forbes says it's devastating here in Tauranga - which has the fourth worst figures of child abuse, in the country. Dorothy Forbes says Creative Tauranga will be exhibiting the works of the children in the care of Homes of Hope, from tomorrow.

Teachers to Strike
Western Bay PPTA teachers part of a national strike this Wednesday, will be taking to the streets to gather support. 400 members voted on taking industrial action against the Government after rejecting the Government's latest proposal. Regional Chairman Jason Smythe says they're marching through Tauranga to collectively stand for well resourced, public education. He says they care deeply about the public education system and health of the secondary schools - both now and in the future.

Police Officer Awarded for Bravery
A Tauranga dog handler has been praised at the highest level for his quick thinking actions during a police pursuit three years ago. Constable James Muir is the sixth police officer ever to be awarded the Charles Upham Award for Bravery. He came to the aid of another officer, who was being threatened with a powerful rifle, during a pursuit of two Whakatane teenagers. One of the offenders then pointed the gun at Constable Muir, who set his police dog Neo on them, and managed to arrest the two youths. Minister Judith Collins says he showed courage and selflessness.

Murder Accused to Appear in Court
A 23 year old fruit packer accused of murder will be back in court this week. The bodies of 32 year old Ravneet Sangha and two year old Anna Sangha were found in Otumoetai back in June. All details surrounding the deaths have been suppressed.

Stay Sea Smart This Summer
Boaties are being encouraged to stay sea smart as summer approaches. Tauranga's Boat and Leisure show over the weekend marked the official start to the season, with hundreds snapping up deals ahead of the GST hike. Coastguard NZ CEO Bruce Reid says fewer volunteers are working more hours, to save lives.
