You don’t have to be a gardener to go there, but it helps. Café Botannix was judged the regional winner in the Best Cafe Awards. One of the city’s newest cafes, Café Botannix is part of Palmers Garden Centre at Bethlehem. Cafe Magazine says ‘for consistently great coffee plus tasty café fare it’s excellent. There’s a big courtyard out the front overlooking the thousands of plants in the garden centre, a big wooden communal table, leather banquette seating, and an emphasis on organic produce and free-range bacon and eggs. Charlie Self, in partnership with Theresa Eagle, is a very serious barista, competing in the New Zealand Barista Championships this year. Sebel Trinity Wharf’s ‘100 Mile Menu’
Tauranga’s Sebel Trinity Wharf has taken the definition of ‘local’ to new and flavoursome heights.
The popular hotel on Tauranga’s waterfront is attracting attention from locals and visitors alike with the introduction of a 100-Mile Menu at the hotel’s Halo Lounge and Dining. It’s a menu that gets not only the gourmet nod of approval but also a sustainability tick. This stunning menu quite literally comprises dishes created from the finest local ingredients all sourced within a 100-mile radius of The Sebel Trinity Wharf Tauranga.
The Sebel’s Executive Chef Daniel Simpson says some of the most interesting and innovative ingredients from the Bay of Plenty have been used to create this unique 100-Mile Menu. He enthuses over ingredients that currently come from within the parameters of Opotiki and Galatea and Waihi – to suit the winter menu. For example, eco-farmed beef is farmed in Waihi, avocados and macadamia nuts are sourced from Katikati orchards, the cheese is the work of a Kaimai cheesemaker, the spinach is grown in Katikati and the wine hails from Galatea. Kumara is out of season so Daniel uses Maori potatoes from Opotiki. The summer menu meanwhile, features berries from Oropi and bluenose from Tauranga waters. And that’s just a taste of it.
‘The 100 mile menu is not only environmentally wonderful, it has also been a great opportunity to showcase the talents of my team who’ve diligently worked with local suppliers to platform the diverse and high quality produce available in the region, while creating something amazing for the palette,’ Daniel says.
What’s more, this talented chef is keen to increase the aims of the lunchtime 100 Mile Menu to as much of the menu as possible at Halo Lounge and Dining. The 100-Mile Menu offers a unique two-course lunch special available from Monday to Friday. For just $29.50 per person diners can savour grilled avocado with washed havarti cheese and sirloin steak with honey roasted yams – beautifully complemented with a glass of wine from Covell Estate. And of course, those magnificent views with the Sebel located on and over Tauranga’s harbour.
