Location: Dive Crescent, Waterfront
Opening Hours: 10am to 4pm. Weekends only during Winter, and 7 days during Summer
The Cargo Shed is Tauranga’s waterfront art and craft market – housed in rather picturesque old wharf sheds. Local artists and organisations sell their wares – mostly at the weekends, but also when cruise ships are in port.
It’s a good place to browse the work of contemporary and traditional Maori artists, including carvings, jewellery, weaving, and painting. There are also multi-media artists, and the arts and crafts include ceramics, fibre, glass, jewellery, leather, metalwork, painting, photography, and prints. All items sold are New Zealand made, there are no "imports" so visitors know they are getting a little slice of New Zealand.

The Cargo Shed opened in November 2004, but in 2009 Creative Tauranga took over its management, with the aim of providing a ‘multifunctional space’ for the local arts sector. In 2013 there were disagreements over management, and the stallholders ended up taking over the lease from Creative Tauranga. They have revamped the space and it has a bright future with a new outdoor platform to facilitate might markets, and other community events.
The Cargo Shed is located in Dive Crescent, a stone’s throw from some excellent food and drink – fish and chips at the fisherman’s wharf, and good coffee at Fixation cafe and roastery across the road. A big hit with visitors from Cruise ship passengers, the shed is open 7 days a week in Summer.
