Downtown Tauranga

Downtown Tauranga and its points of interest, all within easy walking distance, are covered in Walk 10 of the council's Tauranga Walkways booklet—it will get you around all the ‘don’t miss’ sites in town. Start on The Strand and read the four ‘Hidden History’ information panels sited along the waterfront.

The panel nearest the square called ‘A Place to Live’ has a potted history of the downtown, which began to develop in the 1860’s after large areas of land were confiscated from local Maori. Another panel tells the stories behind local streets like Spring Street, that had a freshwater spring. At the northern end of the Strand near the railway crossing, a panel explains the carved Maori pou (poles).  (See also Attractions and Activities – Heritage & Historic Places)

Walk 13 is very popular, following the Otumoetai Foreshore providing great views out over the inner harbour, the Mount and Matakana Island. The track links three reserves —including Fergusson and Kulim Parks where there are information boards.
