Public telephone booths operate mostly on Telecom phone cards (usual outlets). Credit cards and long-distance calling cards are usually accepted as well. Phone booths are located at various points — such as outside the National Bank in Grey Street, downtown Tauranga. There is also a public phone outside the i-SITE Visitor Centre in Willow Street.
Telephone cards are available from the Visitor Centres, supermarkets, backpackers, and the like, sold in $5, $10, $20 and $50 values. Useful operator numbers are: 010 national operator, 018 national directory services, 0170 international operator; and 0172 international directory services. The telephone code (prefix) for the Bay of Plenty is 07.
To make international calls dial 00 before the country code. You’ll need to check with your mobile phone provider regarding roaming facilities. New Zealand’s networks providers are Telecom and Vodafone, with outlets around town —including Grey Street and Devonport Road.
