Tauranga Road Cycling

A new cycleway completed in 2004, takes cyclists on an easy, scenic jaunt from the Tauranga waterfront, out through the Matapihi Peninsula. The ride starts at the old rail bridge on the Strand extension and leads out along a concrete pathway, through quiet orchards and farmland.

Things get busy again at the big Bayfair Shopping Centre roundabout, where, for a shorter ride —you can either head left back along Maunganui Road, left again into Hewlett’s Road, and back to town across the harbour bridge footpath (to avoid close shaves with big trucks!). A longer ride involves heading through the Bayfair Shopping Centre roundabout and onto Girven Road, then left onto Oceanbeach Road, along the waterfront to the Mount. Return via The Mall on Pilot Bay, to Totara Street and the bridge.

Another popular ride is one from central Tauranga out through Turret Road and along Welcome Bay Road returning via Mount Maunganui. The road is narrow and winding in places, and best suited to fairly fit, experienced cyclists. The return ride from 15th Ave out through Welcome Bay to where Welcome Bay Road meets the highway, takes 1—1.5hours. Serious road riders who want a hard training run can head any of the roads leading into the hills —such as Pyes Pa, Oropi or Ohauiti.
