Taupo Fatal Accident
One person is dead after a car hit a tree in the Taupo area south of Hatepe, on Lake Taupo. The Ambulance Service says only one vehicle was involved in the crash on State Highway 1, which happened just before 5am. The road was fully blocked, but was expected to be open again after 8am.
Burned Teen Remains Critical
The sixteen year old Greerton youth who was badly burned in an incident at his home in the early hours of Friday morning, remains in a critical but stable condition in Middlemore Hospital. Temark Nielsen, a student at Tauranga Boys College, received burns to more than fifty per cent of his body. Police are still investigating the incident.
Truck Driver who Killed Cyclist Jailed
A logging truck driver has been jailed for two years and three months. Troy Roberts appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Friday for sentencing, after pleading guilty to reckless driving causing death, and falsifying his log book. Mr Roberts was driving his fully laden logging truck when it collided with a German Tourist, who was cycling round the world. The accident happened just out of Te Puke, last year, and Mr Roberts was thought to have fallen asleep at the wheel, after exceeding his driving limits.
Valuable Training for Tauranga Coastguard
If you saw a flare off the coast on Saturday, there was no need for concern. Tauranga Coastguard, along with Police and Search and Rescue, mounted a number of simulated incidents, which included boats overturning and divers missing. Playground gets Resource Consent
A new playground is to be built at Tyne Park in Welcome Bay. Equipment and layout is now being decided upon after resource consent was granted last week.
