Coastal Cycle Trail Axed
The Tauranga Moana Coastal Cycle Trail will not be built as part of the National Cycleways project by the Ministry of Tourism. Tim Burgess, manager of Tourism Bay of Plenty, said the national body cited too many land access issues and a timeframe that did not match the national project, as the key factors for the Waihi Beach to Tauranga project not receiving any more government funding. Mr Burgess said he was very disappointed that the only projects going ahead are related primarily to mountains and lakes, and none like ours, close to the coastline.
New Members for Baypark Board
Three new members have been appointed to the board of Baypark. Kiwifruit Contractor Sentenced
A self employed Tauranga kiwifruit contractor has been sentenced to eight and a half months home detention and three hundred hours community work, after pleading guilty to tax evasion, of close to eighty thousand dollars. Sohrab Rasek came to New Zealand from Iran twenty years ago as a refugee.
Search for Missing Kayaker’s Body
A search is underway for the body of a missing kayaker in waters near Ohope in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The missing elderly man's family say it's been a week since they last saw him. Police say there's nothing to suggest foul play. They're appealing for sightings of his orange kayak. Archive photo
