Baby Dies Following Smash
The baby girl injured in a road smash in Bay of Plenty over the weekend has died at Starship Hospital. The 11 month old was flown to Auckland after a crash near Kawerau, which also left her parents seriously injured. She died yesterday. Another man in the second car, a Holden Commodore, died at the scene. The Commodore caught fire instantly and passing motorists pulled two other males from the scene.

Local Retailer Caught Trading
A Tauranga retailer will find out their penalty this week after being caught open on Easter Sunday. Most shops aren't allowed to open on Good Friday or Easter Sunday. Department of Labour inspectors visited one local retailer and found them open and trading. They say a decision on what action to take will soon be made after reports are filed.

Mayor Welcomes Taxi ‘Safe Zone’ Idea
Tauranga's mayor says he's open to the idea of a 'taxi safe zone' in the city. There have now been four attacks on city drivers in the past two weeks. Tauranga Mount Taxis manager Bruce Rainey wants a 'safe zone' on The Stand, where the rank's constantly monitored by guards and cameras. Mayor Stuart Crosby is welcoming the idea.

Book Charge Opponents want Second Meeting
A second public meeting on Tauranga's proposed library charges could be in the wind. The city council wants to charge for adult library books lent to ratepayers. Up to 150 people attended Thursday's meeting and opponents now want to organise an evening meeting. And Tauranga City Councillors will today find out how prepared the region is for a big disaster. Tauranga / Western Bay operations manager Alan Pearce will present a report to council, updating the role of civil defence staff.

Jazz Fest Hailed a ‘Huge Success’
Organisers of Easter's National Jazz Festival are already starting to think about next year's event. A large number of events throughout the weekend were sold out, and 30 thousand people attended concerts on The Strand on Saturday and Sunday. Festival director Arne Herrmann says the weekend was a huge success. Photo/Garret Horwitz
