Cruise Ship Season Kicks Off
The cruise ship season is finally upon us with the arrival in port today of the Dawn Princess, along with more than three thousand passengers and crew. It's the first of 42 cruise ship visits to Tauranga between now and the end of March.
TSEC Winning Bid to be Announced
The winning bid for construction of Tauranga's new Sports and Exhibition Centre is expected to be announced before the end of next week. Six pre-qualified tenders are in the running to build the multi million dollar facility beside Baypark, with construction expected to begin early next year.
New Community Centre for Arataki
Good news for those in Arataki, a new Community Centre is to be built at the northern end of Grenada Park, near to the Aquatic Centre and the St Johns Ambulance facility. The location was one of several options on the table being considered by Council.
Moffat Road Traffic Lights ‘Not Feasible’
Authorities have poured cold water on a suggestion to replace the Moffat Road roundabout with a signaled intersection. The roading agency wants to four lane the roadway between the roundabout, and the northern end of Bethlehem. Tauranga's manager for State Highways, Rod James, says a signaled intersection is not really a feasible option as it would take up a lot more room that the current traffic layout.
Waikareao Estuary Sewage Spill
Health warning signs are up following a small sewage spill into the Waikareao Estuary at Pillans Point. The area of concern is along Maxwells Road, Harbour Drive, and at the boat ramp off Cross Road. Water sampling test results are expected tomorrow.
Honors for Hairy Maclary’s ‘Mum’
New Zealand's best known children's author, Tauranga's own Dame Lynley Dodd, creator of 'Hairy Maclary' is to be honoured at a special ceremony at Mills Reef this evening. Dame Lynley is to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Waikato.
