Bowentown, and the headland that forms the Bowentown entrance to Tauranga Harbour, was inhabited long ago by Maori who established pa there and used the headland area for crop cultivation.
A car park on the headland provides great views out to sea, and a walking track leads higher to Cave Bay lookout. At its base, Anzac Bay is a picture-book, safe sandy beach, with pohutukawa trees to the water’s edge at either end.
