This is one of the region’s finest parks which offers idyllic, grassy lakeside picnic spots, interesting short walks and trout fishing. There are three backpackers hostels at the park (book through Tauranga City Council (07) 577 7000).
The park’s family-friendly attractions include Marshall’s Animal Park, off a side road from inside the park. Here there are bison, ponies, eels, and various other animals that children can see and feed. Open Wed & Thurs, weekends in summer, weekdays 10am—pm, longer at the weekends (07) 543 3734.
The Kaimai Café is just minutes away, back along State Highway 29 towards Tauranga, serving tasty home-made food including all-day breakfasts, burgers, cakes and cookies. (07) 543 3136. Across the road is the rustic Kaimai Woolshed, a store selling possum and sheepskin products, etc. (See ‘Top 16 Things to Do’ for more information).
